Product Description
The King George VI Farthing coin, minted from 1937 to 1952, is a small yet significant piece of British numismatic history. The farthing, worth one-quarter of a penny, was an essential part of everyday transactions in the UK during this period.
Obverse:
- The obverse features a left-facing portrait of King George VI, designed by Thomas Humphrey Paget.
- The inscription around the portrait reads "GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN
F:D:IND" (George VI, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India) until 1948. After India gained independence, the inscription was changed to "GEORGIVS VI DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FIDEI DEF" (George VI, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith).
Reverse:
- The reverse, designed by Harold Wilson Parker, depicts a wren, a small bird native to the UK, perched on a branch. The design was chosen to symbolize the modesty and resilience of the British people.
- The inscription "FARTHING" and the year of minting are present.
