France was in ancient times part of the Celtic territory known as Gaul or Gallia. Since the 17th century, the country has played a major role in European and world events including the Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation, the French Revolution, the devastation of two world wars, political and social upheavals, and the loss of a large empire. A lot of these events were commemorated in medals, decorations, and awards. The French National System of Honours is divided into two categories: Honors awarded on behalf of the President of the Republic such as the Legion of Honour the Military Medal or the National Order of Merit and ministerial honors (such as ministerial orders and commemorative medals.
