Product Description
This genuine WWI British military compass, crafted by the renowned instrument maker Short & Mason of London, is a superb example of early 20th-century field navigation equipment. Dated to the First World War period, it comes complete with its original fitted leather case, adding both authenticity and collectible value.
The compass features a solid brass body with a classic blackened military finish, built for rugged use in the trenches and the field. The dial, likely made from mother-of-pearl for improved visibility, is marked with cardinal points and rotates freely. A functional transit lock secures the compass during transport, and the glass cover remains clear and intact.
The original leather case, showing age-appropriate wear, is embossed and hand-stitched, complete with a belt loop or strap closure—designed for ease of access on a soldier’s gear. The case still closes securely, protecting the compass as intended over a century ago.
This Short & Mason compass is more than a navigation tool—it’s a tangible connection to World War I history. Ideal for collectors of military memorabilia, antique scientific instruments, or historical educators, it’s a rare and well-preserved relic from one of the most pivotal eras in modern history.
