Product Description
This original Rifle Brigade cap badge is a superb example of British military insignia, featuring the King’s Crown and crafted in silver anodised aluminium. Manufactured by the renowned military insignia maker J.R. Gaunt of London, this badge represents a post-WWII era design, likely dating from the late 1950s to early 1960s, before the transition to the Queen’s Crown following the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
The badge bears the distinct elements of The Rifle Brigade’s insignia: a crowned Maltese Cross with a central bugle horn and the regimental motto “Celer et Audax” (Swift and Bold). The King’s Crown (Tudor Crown) signifies issue during the reign of King George VI or just before the early adoption of Queen Elizabeth II’s insignia, giving this badge particular historical significance.
Made from anodised aluminium, also known as “staybrite,” this cap badge was part of a broader movement in the British Army to modernize uniform components with lightweight, maintenance-free materials. Despite its lighter weight, the quality of detail in the casting remains sharp and impressive, reflecting J.R. Gaunt’s commitment to craftsmanship.
Complete with its original slider fitting to the reverse, this badge is in excellent condition, with minimal wear and clear maker’s mark. A must-have for collectors of British Army regalia, especially those with a focus on The Rifle Brigade, staybrite badges, or King’s Crown insignia. A fine and rare example of mid-20th century military history.
