Product Description

Description: Originally issued with Doncella cigars this set portrays in colour some of the incidents for which this prestigious medal was awarded between the first in 1854 and 1965. Card number 1 shows the action aboard H.M.S. Hecla when the mate Charles Davis Lucas picked up a live shell which had just landed and threw it overboard. He became the first person to win the Victoria Cross. The set also includes other acts of bravery in the Crimean War, Indian Mutiny, Boer War and the two World Wars in all branches of the military and ends with Lance Corporal Rambahadur Limbu of the 10th Princess Mary's Own Gurkha Rifles in action during the, these days, little known conflict in Borneo in 1965. His extreme bravery saw him rescue men and weapons under heavy fire and at the time the set was issued he had been promoted to Lieutenant and was the only serving Victoria Cross winner. There is plenty of text on the backs about the medal winners and their brave acts plus information on a special album/wallchart that was originally available to house this set. A very worthy set with cards size 90 x 50mm.
