Product Description
An original inert German 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge bearing the P131 S 20 1938 headstamp. This is a genuine pre-Second World War military cartridge produced during Germany's rearmament programme for the Wehrmacht.
The P131 manufacturer's code identifies Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken A.G. (DWM) at Berlin-Borsigwalde, one of Germany's largest and most respected ammunition manufacturers. DWM played a major role in supplying small arms ammunition to the German armed forces before and throughout the Second World War.
Headstamp Breakdown
- P131 – Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken A.G. (DWM), Berlin-Borsigwalde
- S – Standard brass cartridge case (67% copper / 33% zinc brass alloy)
- 20 – Production Lot 20
- 1938 – Year of manufacture
The S case marking denotes the earlier standard brass case. During the late 1930s, Germany also used the S* case, which featured an improved brass alloy. Steel cases (St) did not become widespread until the early years of the Second World War as Germany sought to conserve brass supplies.
Manufactured in 1938, this cartridge dates from the year the Karabiner 98k was becoming the standard service rifle of the German Army. It would have been issued for use in:
- Karabiner 98k (K98k)
- Gewehr 98
- MG13
- Early MG34 machine guns
- Other German weapons chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge
As a pre-war brass-cased example from DWM, this cartridge represents the period immediately before the outbreak of the Second World War and is highly desirable among collectors of Wehrmacht ammunition and Mauser memorabilia.
