Product Description
This is an original First World War .303 trench mortar propelling blank brass cartridge case, used by British forces to launch mortar projectiles during the early years of trench warfare. During WW1, the British Army adapted the standard .303 British cartridge as a propelling charge for certain trench mortar and grenade-launching systems, providing the necessary force to propel bombs or grenades from improvised or purpose-built launchers.
The .303 British cartridge was the standard service round of the British Army and was widely used in rifles and machine guns such as the Lee–Enfield rifle and the Vickers machine gun. Modified blank versions of this cartridge were also utilised in experimental and early trench mortar systems during the Great War.
Trench mortars became an essential weapon of static warfare, allowing soldiers to fire explosive projectiles into enemy trenches that were otherwise difficult to reach with direct rifle or machine-gun fire. Early improvised launchers and grenade dischargers often relied on modified cartridges like these to propel their projectiles.
This example is an original brass cartridge case from the WW1 period and represents an interesting piece of early trench warfare equipment. It has been fully inert and is suitable for safe display or inclusion in First World War militaria collections, ordnance displays, or cartridge collections.
