Product Description
An original Italian 10.35×47R Vetterli M1870/87 inert cartridge, manufactured at the Royal Army Pyrotechnic Establishment, Capua Arsenal, in 1891.
This example bears the desirable G.D ★ C-91 headstamp. The initials G.D identify the government ammunition inspector, the ★ denotes a Berdan-primed military cartridge, and C-91 records manufacture at Capua Arsenal in 1891. These inspection markings are well documented on late nineteenth-century Italian military ammunition.
The 10.35×47R cartridge was adopted for the Italian Vetterli Model 1870 rifle, later modified to the M1870/87 Vetterli-Vitali, one of Europe's first successful military repeating rifles. Although Italy adopted the 6.5mm Carcano in 1891, large stocks of Vetterli rifles and ammunition remained in military stores and continued to see service with reserve and colonial forces for many years.
Featuring its distinctive brass rimmed case and round-nosed full metal jacket projectile, this cartridge represents an important stage in the evolution of Italian military firearms during the transition from single-shot black powder rifles to repeating military arms.
A superb and increasingly difficult cartridge to obtain, ideal for collectors of Italian militaria, Vetterli rifles, nineteenth-century military ammunition, and European headstamps.
