Product Description

An original inert German 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge bearing the P198 S 7 1936 headstamp. This is a genuine pre-Second World War military cartridge manufactured during Germany's rearmament programme for the Wehrmacht.

The P198 manufacturer's code identifies Metallwarenfabrik Treuenbrietzen GmbH, Werk Selterhof, one of Germany's major military ammunition manufacturers during the 1930s. Before 1940, German ammunition factories used P-number codes to disguise the identity of military contractors. These codes were later replaced by the familiar two- and three-letter manufacturer codes.

Headstamp Breakdown

  • P198 – Metallwarenfabrik Treuenbrietzen GmbH, Werk Selterhof
  • S – Standard brass cartridge case (67% copper brass alloy)
  • 7 – Production Lot 7
  • 1936 – Year of manufacture

The S marking identifies the earlier standard brass case. During the late 1930s, Germany introduced the improved S* brass case before progressively adopting St (steel) and St+ cases during the war to conserve copper.

Manufactured in 1936, this cartridge dates from the rapid expansion of the German armed forces before the outbreak of the Second World War. It would have been issued for use in:

  • Karabiner 98k (K98k)
  • Gewehr 98
  • MG13
  • Early MG34 machine guns
  • Other German weapons chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge

As a pre-war brass-cased example, it represents an important period in Germany's military rearmament and is highly sought after by collectors of Wehrmacht ammunition, Mauser rifles and German headstamps.
