Product Description
An original inert German 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge bearing the kam St 5 1943 headstamp. This is a genuine Second World War cartridge manufactured for the Wehrmacht during one of the peak years of German wartime ammunition production.
The kam manufacturer's code identifies HASAG (Hugo Schneider AG), Eisen- und Metallwerke GmbH., Werk Skarżysko-Kamienna, located in occupied Poland. Originally built as the Polish State Ammunition Factory, the plant was seized following the German invasion of Poland in 1939 and became one of the Third Reich's largest producers of small arms ammunition. It manufactured millions of 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridges for the German armed forces between 1941 and 1944.
The Skarżysko-Kamienna works also became infamous for its extensive use of forced labour, with thousands of prisoners compelled to manufacture ammunition under brutal conditions. The factory was one of HASAG's largest wartime armaments facilities.
Headstamp Breakdown
- kam – HASAG (Hugo Schneider AG), Eisen- und Metallwerke GmbH., Werk Skarżysko-Kamienna, occupied Poland
- St – Steel cartridge case
- 5 – Production Lot 5
- 1943 – Year of manufacture
The St marking denotes a steel cartridge case, introduced to conserve brass as Germany's wartime demand for ammunition increased. Steel-cased ammunition became standard production during the middle years of the war and was issued extensively to frontline troops.
This cartridge would have been issued for use in many of Germany's principal 7.92×57mm weapons, including:
- Karabiner 98k
- Gewehr 98
- MG34
- MG42
- FG42
- Other German 7.92mm service weapons
Original kam headstamps are particularly popular with collectors because they represent ammunition manufactured in occupied Poland and are closely associated with the wartime history of HASAG.
