Product Description
An original British WWII .455 Webley Mk II inert cartridge manufactured by the Royal Laboratory, Woolwich Arsenal, and dated 1936.
The RL headstamp identifies production by the Royal Laboratory (RL), Woolwich, the British Government's principal military ammunition factory. Established within the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich, the Royal Laboratory manufactured service ammunition for the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force for over two centuries. The 1936 date places this cartridge in the period immediately before the outbreak of the Second World War, when Britain was increasing ammunition production as international tensions escalated.
The .455 Webley Mk II cartridge was the standard British military revolver round from its adoption in 1897 and remained in widespread service until the introduction of the Mk VIz nitrocellulose loading in 1939. Nevertheless, Mk II ammunition continued to be issued throughout the early years of WWII for the thousands of Webley and Enfield service revolvers still in use by the armed forces, Home Guard and police.
This example bears the desirable RL 1936 II headstamp, making it an excellent addition to any collection of British military ammunition or Webley revolver memorabilia.
