Product Description
An original British Army Mk IV brass rifle oil bottle, issued for use with the Lee-Enfield family of service rifles, including the SMLE No.1 Mk III and early Lee-Enfield variants. Designed to fit inside the rifle’s butt trap, these compact oil bottles were an essential part of every soldier’s cleaning kit, providing lubrication for the rifle while on active service.
This example is a desirable complete specimen, retaining its original brass screw cap, black sealing washer and steel oil applicator/spoon, features that are often missing on surviving examples.
The flat-bottomed brass body identifies it as the Mk IV pattern, introduced in the early 20th century and widely used throughout the First World War and into the inter-war period. The base is stamped with the British War Department Broad Arrow, together with a Crown over “62” and “B” inspection mark, denoting official government acceptance and inspection at Birmingham.
Finished in an attractive aged brass patina with honest service wear, this is an excellent original accessory for a Lee-Enfield rifle display, British Army collection or First World War militaria display.
A genuine and increasingly difficult-to-find complete example of a classic piece of British military equipment.
