Product Description
This is an original blank cartridge for the Line Throwing Gun (LTG), a unique piece of maritime history. The headstamp reads "LTG. K. 45," identifying it as a Kynoch-manufactured cartridge from 1945, specifically designed for use in line-throwing operations. These blank cartridges were used to fire a rope or line from one ship to another, a crucial part of Replenishment at Sea (RAS) operations. RAS involves the transfer of supplies, fuel, or personnel between ships while they are underway, and the Line Throwing Gun was an essential tool for establishing a secure connection between vessels.
The cartridge was designed to be used in a modified Lee Enfield rifle, which had been bored out to approximately .400/.410 caliber to accommodate the blank round. This adaptation allowed the gun to safely fire a line over great distances, ensuring that ships could be connected quickly and securely, even in difficult weather conditions or at high speeds.
The blank cartridge itself is completely inert, containing no projectile, powder, or primer, making it safe for display, collection, or educational purposes. The brass casing and the distinctive headstamp mark its authenticity, with "LTG. K. 45" signifying its historical significance as part of wartime naval operations during World War II.
This rare and fascinating collectible offers a glimpse into the practical challenges faced by naval forces during wartime and peacetime logistics. Whether you're a collector of military or maritime memorabilia, this Line Throwing Gun blank cartridge is a unique and valuable addition to your collection.
