This is an original blank cartridge for the Line Throwing Gun (LTG), a unique piece of maritime history. The headstamp reads "LTG. K. 45," identifying it as a Kynoch-manufactured cartridge from 1945, specifically designed for use in line-throwing operations. These blank cartridges were used to fire a rope or line from one ship to another, a crucial part of Replenishment at Sea (RAS) operations. RAS involves the transfer of supplies, fuel, or personnel between ships while they are underway, and the Line Throwing Gun was an essential tool for establishing a secure connection between vessels.
The cartridge was designed to be used in a modified Lee Enfield rifle, which had been bored out to approximately .400/.410 caliber to accommodate the blank round.
