Product Description
“A specialist short-case .50 spotting round used with British WOMBAT recoilless rifles.”
Original inert British .50 calibre spotting round with Kynoch 1973 headstamp, designed for use with recoilless rifle systems such as the L6 WOMBAT.
Unlike standard .50 BMG ammunition, this example features the shortened case design used in spotting rifles, where the round was ballistically matched to the main weapon to allow accurate ranging before firing.
Spotting rounds were used to visually confirm impact, enabling the operator to adjust aim before firing the main recoilless rifle round. This system was widely used during the Cold War period, particularly with British anti-tank weapons.
Manufactured by Kynoch, a key British ammunition producer, this round represents a specialist military cartridge with strong collector appeal.
✔ Dated 1973 (Cold War era)
✔ Kynoch manufacture (UK)
✔ Short-case spotting round (non-standard .50 BMG)
✔ Used with WOMBAT recoilless rifle systems
✔ Fully inert – no live components
A less common and highly collectible British military spotting round, ideal for display or specialist collections.
- The small rifle mounted above the main barrel = .50 spotting rifle (M8C type)
- That fires the short .50 spotting round (like yours)
- The flash you sometimes see is from the spotting round impacting the target, not the main gun
