Product Description
The .45 Long Colt cartridge has a rich and storied history, deeply intertwined with the development of firearms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in the American West. Here's a brief overview of its historical background:
-
Origins: The .45 Long Colt cartridge, often simply referred to as the .45 Colt, was introduced in 1873 by the famous firearms manufacturer Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company (now Colt's Manufacturing Company). It was designed specifically for Colt's Single Action Army revolver, also known as the "Peacemaker."
-
Military Adoption: Initially, the .45 Colt cartridge was adopted by the United States Army for use in the Colt Single Action Army revolver. It was chosen as the standard-issue sidearm cartridge for cavalry troops and other military personnel during the latter part of the 19th century.
-
Frontier and Law Enforcement: Beyond its military use, the .45 Colt cartridge gained widespread popularity on the American frontier and among law enforcement agencies. It was favored for its stopping power and effectiveness against human targets as well as dangerous animals encountered in the wilderness.
-
Famous Figures: The .45 Colt cartridge became closely associated with numerous iconic figures of the American West, including lawmen, outlaws, and cowboys. Legends such as Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and Billy the Kid were known to have carried firearms chambered in .45 Colt.
