Product Description
An original 1936 dated .303 British inert cartridge featuring the distinctive SMI headstamp, representing scarce Italian-manufactured ammunition produced during the interwar period.
The SMI marking identifies Società Metallurgica Italiana, one of Italy’s principal ammunition and metallurgical manufacturers during the early 20th century. Although Italy primarily used the 6.5×52mm Carcano cartridge domestically, SMI also produced ammunition in foreign calibres, including .303 British, for export contracts and overseas military supply.
Dated 1936, this cartridge originates from the important pre-Second World War era and reflects international ammunition production during a period of growing military expansion across Europe.
The additional “L” marking forms part of the original loading or lot designation and adds further collector interest to the round. Italian-produced .303 cartridges are considerably less common than British or Commonwealth examples and are increasingly sought after by advanced collectors of military ammunition and unusual headstamps.
This example retains authentic period appearance with attractive age-related patina and clear markings, making it an excellent addition to collections focused on British calibre export ammunition, Italian militaria, or rare .303 variations.
This cartridge has been rendered completely inert and is safe for display purposes only.
