Product Description

The Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC) was a corps of the British Army responsible for the supply and maintenance of military stores, including ammunition, vehicles, and equipment. The RAOC badge with a slider, issued between 1947 and 1949, is a distinctive piece that marks a brief post-war period when the British Army was restructuring its ranks and regalia.

Description:

The RAOC badge from this period features a unique design that includes several symbolic elements:

  • Crown: At the top of the badge is the St. Edward’s Crown, symbolizing the authority of the British monarchy.
  • Ordnance Shield: Below the crown is the shield, which contains three field cannons, representing the corps' responsibility for artillery and munitions.
  • Garter: Surrounding the shield is the Garter, inscribed with the motto "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" (Evil to him who evil thinks), a motto of the Order of the Garter.
  • Laurel Wreath: Encircling the central elements is a laurel wreath, representing victory and achievement.
  • Scroll with "Royal Army Ordnance Corps": Below the wreath, a scroll with the corps' name is prominently displayed.

History:

The badge with a slider (a vertical attachment for mounting the badge on a cap or beret) was used from 1947 to 1949, marking a transitional era. This period followed World War II, during which the RAOC played a crucial role in supplying and equipping the British Army. The badge represents the corps' adaptation to peacetime roles, including logistical support in occupied territories and domestic military needs. The RAOC continued to evolve until it was amalgamated into the Royal Logistic Corps in 1993, ending its distinct identity. This badge is a historical artifact reflecting the immediate post-war military landscape and the RAOC's ongoing legacy in military logistics
